SOAPBOX of the week: let love live!

“Love wishes to perpetuate itself. Love wishes for immortality.”     – Mortimer Adler, philosopher, educator, and author

Love. Perhaps the best damn four-letter-word that ever was. It is deemed the greatest connector in the world, intrinsically mysterious in its depth, influence and effectiveness. A resource available to every single person who walks the earth, and which shall never run out. An impenetrable shield to conflict; a tireless fire to fatigue; the fulfillment of the law that binds us as human beings. It cannot be destroyed, and sits dormant in every cell of your being until your take your first breath. And one day you finally learn of its name and its powers, and witness its effect on family, friend, stranger and foe alike! Question is, folks, what are you doing to NOW release your love within? Do you insist on its value, but run in fear and deny to participate in it? Or merely sprinkle it out here and there with stingy calculation? Knowing all that it can do to create joy and peace in your own home, let alone across the world… keeping it bottled up indeed sounds like an absurd choice!  Am I right?!  Well, snap out of it and choose to perpetuate it.  Elect to experience the glory of its glow for your own heart and let love live…NOW!

SOAPBOX of the week: immeasurable impact

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.”     – William James, philosopher and psychologist

It’s the sign that reads “population 5,861”.  The reason for a weight limit on an elevator.  How a candidate wins a neck-in-neck running.  The latest entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.  Countless scenarios happening every second of every day across the globe that make the very same simple point: every life counts.  That last child born, extra pound of body weight, final vote cast, and simultaneous snow angel number 15,851 definitely counts.   But more than that, folks, every life matters.  Period.  Now, most of us shamefully let this awesome truth go in one ear and out the other…until it involves us, personally.  Right?  When it feels like perhaps you might not be counted …or that you might not seem to matter.  Ah, then you sit at attention, flail your arms, and cause a stink!  Well, truth be told, many-a-time you are not the most important number in the equation.  But just because you’re not gracing the top of everyone’s VIP lists, doesn’t mean you go unnoticed or aren’t needed.  Folks, you’ll never know just how your existence, let alone daily actions, as mundane or massive as they may be, make a difference.  So, take good ole Shakespeare’s words to heart: all the world is indeed a stage.  Watch your character and act like what you do ripples lifetimes of impact.  Because it does.

SOAPBOX of the week: elbow-greased responsibility

Folks, this is a snapshot of life’s self-inflicted aggravations…step back and look at the Bigger Picture and see how daily avoidance in responsibility breeds issues larger than society can handle.  Just think about it…

“Our greatest weariness comes from work not done.”     – Eric Hoffer, social writer and philosopher

Indeed a body in motion stays in motion, as the physics gurus have proven.  Oh, but the opposite is undeniably true, too: the lazier you are…the lazier you become.  Now, don’t waste any energy arguing with me, people; we wouldn’t want you to overexert yourself!  Besides, you know it’s true!  When the laundry piles up, the files bury your desk, and the clock nags that you’re perpetually late, I suggest you reconsider that it might not be someone else’s fault.  Perhaps in satiating your unhealthy reality TV, water cooler gossip, and nicotine fixes, you’ve sacrificed time, energy, money, reputation and relationships.  We all get 24 hours each day to get stuff done.  Instigate your own perpetual motion, folks, and your life-enhancing achievements will soon wipe out your excuse-filled exhaustion.  Choose movement over creeping moss and enjoy the enlightening sensations of a refreshed, relieved state of mind.

SOAPBOX of the week: lose the crown, folks!

“Extremes meet, and there is no better example
than the haughtiness of humility.”
 – Ralph Waldo Emerson, philosopher and poet

Aaah, the precariously transient state between humility and pride.  None of us are excluded from being that unconditionally-loved child who’s still starving for attention…even moreso as fully-grown adults!  And rest never finds us on life’s perpetual teeter-totter of meekness vs. expectation.  The moment we even think in one direction, the balance shifts.  When we sport our sacrifices like invisible royal robes, we’re surprised with the ensuing gratitude and accolades.  Yet, blessings are tainted when we join in the applause, trumpeting our importance for more reward and approval.  In essence, our once grateful spirits are trampled by our ugly egos, to again reveal crowns of self-serving exaltation.  So, what’s the harmonizing solution?  Simple.  Separate the gifts from the real earnings from your efforts.  Bow to the unquestionable fact that you’ll never be humble enough.  Then, witness the marvels when being thankful becomes your sole modus operandi.

SOAPBOX of the week: the sign says PULL, folks!

“Act without doing; work without effort.”     – Tao te Ching by Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu

Did you ever push too hard only to have the metaphorical swing come back and hit you dead-on in the chin?  Liken this to the self-inflicted searches for insight and inspiration from a bag of stale fortune cookies.  Sometimes you’ve just got to let the meaning find you.  Forcing profundity or comedy is like putting spoiled cream in your long awaited morning cup of coffee.  It tastes like crap… and wastes a perfectly good setup.  Be you.  Be open.  And sip slowly.
