SOAPBOX of the week: the learning curves of life

“All things are difficult before they are easy.”     – Dr. Thomas Fuller, physician & preacher

Very few things in life come with an instruction manual, estimation of time to completion, or list of things you’ll have to weather to succeed.  Reminisce closing your first deal, raising a kiddo, heck, even learning how to tie your shoes.  But even if directions were available to us for the things we choose to undertake, a peculiar variable called “the learning curve” shows up.  It’s a mystery how our genetic makeup sets our level of intellect and how quickly we simply “get it”.  But the ultimate deciding factors of how swiftly you triumph over a challenge are your determination and your discipline.   Nothing is impossible, folks.  And when you don’t stand in your own way, everything can become a beautiful walk in the park.

SOAPBOX of the week: Go green or be gone

“To cherish what remains of the Earth and to foster its renewal is our only legitimate hope of survival.”     – Wendell Berry, philosopher, novelist and social activist

It’s about time we stopped snickering at Al Gore, the forewarning NPR folks and tree-hugging, hybrid hippies…because they might be onto something!  It’s about time we stopped being so selfish and purposefully merged as Humankind for the simple Darwinian hopes of perpetuating our existence by strengthening our collective homebase – we call Earth!  For, not seeing is believing.  When a species of animal disappears, we must rescue braver.  When a strain of plant disappears, we must think greener.  When snowcaps are melting, swallowing up islands and life, we must conserve stricter. Amidst the chatter of economics, religion and war, don’t miss the underconversation of environment, culture and interdependent community.  My fellow EARTH-lings, we must research cleaner, protect fiercer, commit firmer, explore broader, spend wiser, educate brighter.  May we all look back after long, fulfilling lives to proclaim that we are survivors and all did our part.  It’s our time to think globally…and act globally.

SOAPBOX of the week: Intentional magical mystery

“An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.”     – William Bernbach, businessman

Ask anyone walking down the street, and they’ll insist they’ve had a million dollar idea pass them by…someone stole it or they just never got around to cashing in on it.  I’m sure you’ve got your own you’re still kicking yourself over.  I’d argue, though, that even the little specks of creative, clever, and crazy notions you cultivate could become spectacular gems.  Point is, regardless of their presumed magnitude …or money-making ability… only you can give your concepts legs to leap out of your brain and become tangible possibilities.  So, hone in on the ones that bring sparkle to your spirit.  Devote attention to creating their bright futures in reality.  Then adorn yourself in the celebration of their magical impact.
