SOAPBOX® mini-motivation: take a hike, buddy!

“Each day should have a clearly marked emergency exit sign.”     ~ Dr. SunWolf, educator, attorney & author

Ok, folks.  Calm down…it’s only Monday.  Indeed the tsunami of anxiety, emotions, expectations and fears crash on the crown of many of you, drowning you in swill of stress that may very well permeate your ever minute.  And if some annoyingly positive person (i.e. yours truly) tells you that a perspective  shift can serve as your life preserver for the day… you can take the words to heart and fill your half-empty glass.  Or you can tell the world to “stuff it” and take a hike, yourself.  Indeed, sometimes the answer you seek ain’t gonna come through the internet… but it might fall from the sky into your open convertible!     ~ KD

SOAPBOX® mini-motivation…with Pooh

We’re always told it’s the little things in life that really matter...keep us going…reveal the greatest importance…and leave the most memorable mark on our fleeting memories.  Chances are we have that 2-second a-ha moment every other day or so.  But with the buzz of an obnoxious alarm, another day-o-decisions smacks us upside the head, and, admittedly, many of us wake and grunt through another seemingly nightmarish day (though it rarely is) towards our artifically flavored, pie-in-the-sky American dream.

I suppose an alternative habit might be to create your own a-ha moment upon waking… I mean, it’s called WAKING UP, right?!  Perhaps a Pooh-ism might put you in the mood of change…                  ~KD

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”

“What’s for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”

“I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully.  “It’s the same thing,” he said.

SOAPBOX of the week: the defiance of imagination

Restlessness and discontent are the first necessities of progress.”     ~ Thomas Edison, inventor, scientist & businessman

Remember when you were a kiddo and nothing could limit your imagination or abilities? Even when the omnipotent ogres (named Mom and Dad) interrupted your schemes with a booming NO and a list of chores, you’d soon return to your secret homebase and set to saving the world from evil or concocting a magical potion to fly.  And even though you never reeaally beat out all the bad guys, touched the clouds, nor became the first fifth grade President of the United States… day after day, with invisible cape in tow, you’d drink a glass of milk, punch your fist to the sky and jump off the front porch to have another go at it! Dreaming and trying went hand-in-hand because you just couldn’t sit still with not knowing “what if…?

So, what about now? When people, politics and predicaments halt your high-reaching, how do you redeem the cape, deactivate the doubting voice, and once again take to leaping tall buildings? Perhaps an ounce of reverse-psychology might do the trick. Imagine where you might be if you had purposefully lowered your expectations of yourself throughout life. Dropped them right to the bottom rung. Listened to naysayers. Tabled your dreams. Never asked the tough-as-nails questions. Never investigated the what-if’s in life. The results would have been completely unacceptable, if even imaginable in the first place. Right? Well, then trust that this magically unyielding childhood curiosity, which steered you clear of a stalled, unexplored life, is still within you, folks!  So, go on! and dig it up, fire it up, and wrap yourself in its power to again move you forward, onward and up, up, and away.

SOAPBOX of the week: full plate of prosperity

“The breakfast of champions is not cereal, it’s the opposition.”   – Nick Seitz, golf commentator and author

Ask any successful, wisdom-filled entrepreneur what they fill their metaphorical fueltank with each morning and you’ll get the same answer:  anything that contests their goals and has the potential power to thwart their passionate mission.  Waking yet again to tireless, cutting-edge competition and volatile market trends, close-minded pessimists and their very own doubtful demons, they choose to sit down and devour the plateful like a steaming stack of flapjacks with a side of crisp bacon.  So what about you?  Certainly, you can’t ignore, avoid or shoo away the existence of antagonists; nor do you have to be another rat in the rat race, leveraging negativity, dishonesty and manipulation.  Oh, but you don’t have to be someone’s dinner either.  Perhaps it’s time you pushed aside that depleted duo of Wheaties and wheatgrass (or whiskey for some of you!) and instead extracted the high-octane from such meaty rivals.  Choose to tap that energy to maintain honesty, community and compassion in your ambitious pursuits and you’ll find opposition, in its truest nature, undoubtedly drives you to create an even greater champion within you.

SOAPBOX of the week: 154 million strong

“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”     – Theodore Roosevelt, US President

Tis Labor Day, the day we honor all the folks that hustle each and every day.  Even after the demise of our economy over the past two years, more than 154 million still shed blood, sweat and tears still roll up sleeves to roll in a paycheck.  Whether you’re juggling 2 part-time positions, clocking a solid 40, or riding the entrepreneurial roller coaster,   you contribute to the welfare of this massive nation and your own little neighborhood all the same.  That said, I challenge you to REALLY THINK ABOUT the social and economic contributions that you, a vibrant, strong American worker bee, have made to the growth, wealth, and prosperity of this country.  My pop used to say that hard work never killed anyone!  Perhaps the opposite is moreso the truth. So take this day to reflect, reconnect and rejoice at the opportunities that knock at your door each day, then dive right back in with your hair on fire and believe that your labor is a gift that keep giving .

SOAPBOX of the week: brutal truth of brilliance

“Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.”     ~ Howard Aiken, physicist and computing pioneer

A lightbulb flickers on and its monumental “a-ha moment” sparks a Fourth of July display in your mind, lighting a future glistening with influence, income and an influx of opportunities your opponents will soon envy.  We’re talking an idea worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize, Top Invention of the Decade, or at least a key to the city and a park in your name.  And with life-and-death urgency you ready to share it with the world… or at least your nosy neighbor, seeking wonder-filled ooh’s and aah’s.  Oh, but then the bulb dims when you realize revealing your “golden idea” to give it a pulse and bring it to the masses one day… means letting the BIG SECRET out!  So you cower and cover the brilliance of your brainstorm for fear of another pilfering its power.  Sound familiar?  The good news is, if it’s not just another regurgitated, so-called revolutionary way to slice bread, the boxed-in thinkers won’t want to touch it with a 10-foot pole.  It’s ALL you, baby!  The bad news is (as seasoned entrepreneurs will attest)…it’s ONLY you.  Like the painstakingly clichéd process of feeding veggies to a defiant kiddo, you’d better ready for a battle with equally the belligerent naysayers.  But… if you stay passionate and true to your revelation and its reach, reinforcements will eventually rally your cause and illuminate the path to your success.  So, if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves, my friend, go ahead and clear space on the shelves for those awards!
