SOAPBOX of the week: read between the lines

“The advertisement is the most truthful part of the newspaper.”     – Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President

You  heard me correctly.  Businesses openly tell us:  Yup, we plunked down a bunch of cash for a flashy ad to sell you something.  Yes, there might be some strings attached…but at least we’ve included it in the fine print.  See, not too complicated, because we know WHO’S talking, WHAT’S on the table, and WHAT decisions we can make.  Now, the news of the paper isn’t nearly as simple nor straightforward, and the behind-the-scenes is something the public is rarely revealed.  Competition yields sensationalism and selectivity, pitting ratings over research while the politics of placement breeds angles and agendas and skews headlines. Readers are left oftentimes confused about WHO’S talking, WHAT’S on the table, and WHAT choices we might need to make.  Funny how centuries-old sarcasm still holds truth today: news is a business, and they’re called “stories” for a reason.  So check your filtering system, listen to your gut, and don’t believe everything you read.

SOAPBOX of the week: faithfilled sense of humor

“It is a test of a good religion whether you can joke about it.”        – Gilbert Keith Chesterton, journalist and novelist

Here’s a theory I propose that blankets many a serious topic: If you’re confident and content with your opinion, belief and commitment to something, be it politics, family, art or, yes, the “R” word, should the little digs or full-on sarcastic comedic routines still ruffle your feathers?  Essentially, if you know “where you’re at” with your religion, shouldn’t the one-liners just roll off?  Well, think about it, folks: as human beings we intrinsically screw-up, exaggerate and over-Hallmark the customs, costumes and communications within each category…and we can’t help but produce our own comic strips!  So, I say, seek and secure your FAITH in your chosen religion.  Take this seriously, for it is a lifelong anchor.  But allow for a giggle or guffaw as well, for our imperfections are funny and make us all wonderfully human, and in need, indeed, of what faith can give us!

SOAPBOX of the week: Present-tense positivity

“Don’t worry about anything. Worrying never solved anything.  All it does is distort your mind.”     – Milton Garland, oldest working businessman

We’ve all been there: someone says, “Relax.  Don’t worry about it” and you cringe.  Easier said than done, right?  But take an honest look at the plethora of times you’ve made mountains out of molehills, only to kick yourself for the energy you wasted, the opportunities you missed out on, the people you upset.  Worrying creates a false future with a worse case scenario as the premiere outcome …and you as the lead victim.  How does that serve you?  It doesn’t.  So don’t go there!  Period.  Instead, stay here!  Empower yourself by remaining in the present and trusting the proverbial “Law of Attraction”.  Positive thoughts in your current reality will attract positive outcomes and squelch that warped image in your noggin.

SOAPBOX of the week: Move, groove and grow in faith

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”       -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., minister & social activist

Daunted by great decisions, we seek to get it in gear and try something new.  What makes us hesitate?  What happened to our enthusiasm of leaving Point A?  Or the belief that something groovy is just around the corner?  Well, it’s still there.  If you listen closely, the first step is already calling you and the promise from faith-filled action will ignite and propel your spirit forward at the perfect pace.  Ironically, the horror of standing still then becomes your driving force against the once-intimidating challenge of The Big Picture.  So, give it a shot.  Write down your goals and gameplan.  Listen to your heart, for it has the power to spark the memory that success ain’t complicated.  Just place faith in the ground beneath your feet…and climb!

Dalton Publishing Earns National Distribution for Kimberlie Dykeman’s PURE SOAPBOX

Dalton Publishing inked a national deal with Midpoint Trade Books, a national book distributor in New York. Dalton founder Deltina Hay says the Austin-based publishing company’s strong presence at this year’s world-renowned BEA Book Conference in L.A. earned the nod of one of New York’s hardest working distributors.  For over a dozen years, Midpoint has focused its talent and energy on helping independent publishers build successful publishing programs in the trade marketplace.

What does this mean for Kimberlie Dykeman and Pure Soapbox, the first title launched under Dalton’s new imprint, Wiggy Press?  A vastly-reputable source will now pitch and supply Pure Soapbox to the national chain bookstores and beyond, as well as provide much more exposure to the overall national publishing world market, including schools and libraries.  This, combined with the efforts of KD herself, the publisher, and soon-to-be signed publicity firm, will be the powerful push essential to garner national recognition across broad consumer demographics. PURE SOAPBOX  launches 6.25.08.  Available where books are sold!
