SOAPBOX® mini-motivation…pura vida

“Es una historia sobre vidas en estado puro. Es pura vida.”    ~ José María Mendiluce, award-winning novelist of film entitled Pura Vida

“It is a story of lives that are in a pure state. It is pura vida.”   What could that obscure little verse possibly mean to Americans…I mean, U.S. folks.  (After all the land from which this precious and ironically omnipotent phrase blooms is also in America.  South America.  The land of Costa Rica.)

Pure vida is the breakfast, lunch and dinner of Costa Ricans…and I am en route this week to sample the menu.  Mind you, for most of us, our spirits are frazzled from stress; our minds fractioned from too many decisions; our bodies poor examples of health in a fast-food-nation mocked by assembly-lined plastic surgery shops.  But there is another way of thinking and, therefore, doing…living.  With ease and fewer expectations and gratefulness of the little things.

Pure vida  is the seemingly out-or-reach, beautiful butterfly of joy, peace and optimism we find ourselves chasing after, albeit with super-sized net and insect spray…once we realize the clichéd “American Dream” of the 19th century doesn’t really hold its punch.  The promise of the possibility of prosperity and success indeed wipes out the more admirable pursuits of life and happiness, when too many entitled folks use freedom to a fault.  Perhaps PURE LIFE is is just dying to pursue us.

Pure vida, then, is my prayer for you… for me.  Your “good life” in its most truthful properties and meaning…is good for me.  After all, what goes around…!

SOAPBOX® mini-motivation…with Pooh

We’re always told it’s the little things in life that really matter...keep us going…reveal the greatest importance…and leave the most memorable mark on our fleeting memories.  Chances are we have that 2-second a-ha moment every other day or so.  But with the buzz of an obnoxious alarm, another day-o-decisions smacks us upside the head, and, admittedly, many of us wake and grunt through another seemingly nightmarish day (though it rarely is) towards our artifically flavored, pie-in-the-sky American dream.

I suppose an alternative habit might be to create your own a-ha moment upon waking… I mean, it’s called WAKING UP, right?!  Perhaps a Pooh-ism might put you in the mood of change…                  ~KD

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”

“What’s for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”

“I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully.  “It’s the same thing,” he said.

SOAPBOX® mini-motivation

The power of suggestion… what does that really mean?  After all, depending on the suggester,  sometimes the prompt had a little more ultimatum attached, especially as a kid.  Think: authority figure.  And you probably gave a good fight.  But even now, when you’re the target of egging-on, you still stand your ground… due to ignorance, ego or just plain laziness.  So when the tables are turned, and you’re the instigator, perhaps you’ll remind yourself of the battle within.  So trust that even though the ball’s not in your court, if you keep serving…  your “opponent” might just volley back a YES!                                                 ~ KD

SOAPBOX® mini-motivation

“I don’t believe in Beatles. I just believe in me.”      ~ John Lennon, music icon, social activist

Aaaahhh, yes, here we have another anecdote from yet another pioneer of timeless society who embodied greatness both with and without his band of brothers.  Indeed we are all part of some larger entity— friendship, family, a team, organization, corporation, or perhaps even book-of-the-month club or rock-n-roll band. The list scrolls endlessly. You could plug yourself into a jillion partnerships for reasons of acceptance, recognition, money, accountability factors, social aspects, personal rewards, hell, even just to say you are a member of something!

So, take a moment and think about why you still proudly carry the virtual membership card for each. I hope that when all is said and done, regardless of whatever bonuses you reap from such fellowships, you realize that you are the magical ingredient in each entity.  The fact is you get what you give once you acknowledge the absolute greatness that you embody simply as a solo artist. Trust in your uniqueness, that these outside affiliations stand secondary to the ultimate union between you and your true heart. Give yourself  “buy-in”  first, then decide where your music might turn symphony— and plug in!  Belief is an extremely powerful instrument, provided you learn how to play it.

You got s-k-i-l-l-s?  Really?  Then why are you still harping on yourself for not being able to this…and that… and all of those other line items?   Perhaps it’s time you let loose the suffocated child in your noggin and let it wander back to the land of  “I can do anything!”  Fifty bucks says, you’ve stagnated your system of success and forgot that your current gifts never run out of possibilities.  If nothing is truly impossible then perhap you remove that OVERSIZED word from your adult vocab and look at what it’s been hiding.    ~ KD

They say, timing is everything.  Yup.  I have to agree.  Timing made it OK for me to not write a ditty or volley a new SOAPBOX® video in your inbox on Monday.  Instead, I let timing  takes its course and drive me to scribe today.  The day after I met Kevin Carroll. (www.kevincarrolkatalyst.comTiming allowed him to water the seed of optimism, determination, imagination, energy, love and passion that I’d already planted in my own heart so many years ago…but which still, ALWAYS needs more nurturing.

“Pursuing your life’s work requires CONSTANT CREATIVITY because the paths will not always be obvious or easy to follow.”     ~ Kevin Carroll, author, speaker, agent for social change

I hope timing has its way with you today, this week, this month.           ~ KD
