SOAPBOX® mini-motivation: pageant or poetry

“Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, enjoy the air and behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.”       ~ David McCullough, modern-day English teacher

Life is not a pageant.  And yet we  unabashedly tuck this gloriously divine journey and spontaneously shared experience into a flippant 4-letter word and dress it up like a calamatied, desperate, purpose-less reality star who ultimately exploits and extinguishes her own value.  Life is not charading parade of nipped and tucked excuses of beauty…of average activities reupholstered to elicit wooing and swooning in hopes of earning awards no more valuable or necessary  than a 14 carat gold tombstone.  Life is not a calling to exhibit one’s presumed importance for awe’s sake of our 7 billion relatives.  For life is LIFE.  It’s like light and air and thoughts and bodies… it’s just there.  And we all have IT… for some time.  And no one’s is more important.  For we are all but a sum of parts playing on a gameboard on an unpretentious planet… and when one piece gets taken away, the game still goes on.

And so, perhaps life is like a poetry slam, or so I humbly reflect.  A dedicated effort of an affected orator striving to breathe life into the written word with emphatic, emoting performance that eggs both speaker and audience to tug the air for more oxygen and the room for more space and actions for more meaning.  Life is emulated by the aerobic effort required by this act of igniting possibilities into a kinetic energy that spills on and rips through every thread of those in the same circling space.   And yet the expansion of meaning in the mutterings from muted paper are mere reflections of the challenges of the poet himself.  Though he stands upon a stage, he knows his spectators ironically watch themselves shift under influence, and he is without need of approval.  For the poet alone strives to make it to the top of a metaphorical mountain…but for the experience alone of seeing a new view revealed upon his last breath into the last particle of punctuation.  Breath to thoughts to words to actions to breath again… and then another upward hike to enlightenment.  Unstaged life unfolding.   ~ KD

SOAPBOX® mini-motivation: thanks takes to flight

“To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do.”     ~ Victor Hugo, poet, novelist & activist

Indeed, I am a Christian who cherishes Christmas and Easter for their innate awesome events and subsequent movements throughout the world.  But there is nothing quite like Thanksgiving.  Tis the most meaning-full holiday of the year, I believe…a truly holy day…  that crosses all boundaries and binds all faiths and followings.  It is a simple opportunity to gather without agenda, without guilt, without gaudiness and overpriced ticket items, without marketing schemes or madness.

Pure in nature and message: GIVE THANKS for all you have in your life and FOR YOUR LIFE!  And share that with one another.  That’s it, folks.  A day that beckons you to drop your minutia-filled week and come together to connect and share and show love.  Not as difficult as some of us seem to make it.  And even if miles separate your loved ones, you’d be amazed how far your thoughts and prayers of peace and positivity can travel.  So this year, friends, with full heart I wish you all a simple, pure, love-filled and blessed Thanksgiving.  Further, I pray that you continue to give and show thanks every day thereafter.  It’s not that difficult.        ~  KD

SOAPBOX of the week: age-old action-reaction

The meaning of good and bad… is simply helping or hurting.”      ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson, philosopher and poet

Such a simple statement, which no one can debunk.  You and I both know, it ain’t tough to find “evil” lurking about.  Temptations and trickery, loopholes and white lies, judgments and limitless opportunities for self-serving joy.  And when we ourselves participate in creating, delivering or supporting such bad thought, words, and works, we do damage to people and the planet at large… only to have it circle right back to our own backyards.  I only pray that the karmic boomerang effect ultimately instigates change in your choices.  Conversely, it’s tough to argue or ignore the gratification that rushes in when you do good, right? The excitement in the wonderment of how far the ripple will stretch and even a rejoicing in tapping your own power to help!   That said, there’s an everlasting supply of this  glorious feeling at your fingertips.  For it’s the by-product of simply doing good…and there’s an opportunity around every corner, folks.  So seek them, seize them and spread ‘em with love!

SOAPBOX of the week: devotion to the dream

The very least thing you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for.  And the most you can do is live inside that hope.  Not admire it at a distance but live right in it, under its roof.     ~ Barbara Kingsolver, author

Aaah, words that would make Walt Disney smile.  At some golden, defining moment in your life, a glorious vision plants its seed in your heart and mind and begins to branch through your imagination.  An unflickering image of a person, place, event, achievement, or experience -it eclipses your fears and ignites your future perfect with wild hope.  Over time, as it grows from idea to driving force, you flip-flop it from top priority to back-burner ideology in reaction to life’s roller coaster, yet you remain steadfast to its potential and focused on its eventual fruits.  And that’s the part that the average person can’t grasp.  The ones who staple a shelf-life on childhood dreams and adult ambitions alike, in turn projecting their own insecurities and unforgiving failures.  It’s these hope-deficient naysayers who toss prickly words in envious aim to pop the faith-filled balloon that lifts you up daily.  And they turn up amongst friends, family and strangers, chancing that you’ll question mark your passionate pursuit of purpose and join their crowd of cowards.  But, each day that you face them down, your wish seemingly comes closer to becoming true, as if it champions the cause of YOU.  That said, never divorce from the dream, folks; for there is joy, love, excitement and priceless memories in the house of hope…and it’s safe inside.

SOAPBOX of the week: the melody of epiphany

Never underestimate the power of listening.”     – Anonymous

So, you’ve heard that song a million times, tapped your foot to it, even sang along.  But one random radio-logged day, your steel-trap mind somehow sifts through the memorized words to unveil eerily profound meaning and magic…and something just shifts.  A veritable musical masterpiece colors your eardrums with a delightful enlightenment as the crooner sings directly to an audience of one.  At once, all other soundful distraction is eclipsed; your mind’s attention is fully focused; and understanding floods through every ounce of your being.  Amazing, you think, as the a-ha’s widen your eyes and lift your heart!  All that from just a simple song you’ve heard a million times.  Now, just think of all the points and perspectives you may have missed not truly “tuning in” to the sounds that hold much greater importance –like the voice of your loving spouse, hopeful child, overwhelmed business partner, needy friend, or special stranger… but most importantly yourself.  Prick your ears to hear the music of life and listen closely to embrace the power in its blessed lyrics whispered just for you.

SOAPBOX of the week: the science of love

“Love withers with predictability; its very essence is surprise and amazement.”     – Leo F. Buscaglia, psychologist, author

Lasting love ain’t interested in scientific systems, processes of play-by-play, nor sequences of schemed strategies.   She ain’t up for pressuring data for deduction and calculation.  And above all, l’amour ain’t suited for spreadsheets, where formidable, formulaic boxes limit her possibilities or forecast lofty expectations.  Nope, she’s a bit more of a rebel with a gypsy chaser, enthusiastically driven to create adventure for all involved.  An insatiable curiosity propels her into life’s nooks and crannies to reveal golden gems that leave her incredulous… yet thirsty for more!  Indeed, her daily inspiration is effervescently uplifted by the ebb and flow of spontaneity.   Let her reign freely and she will grow to overcome the troubles of time, perhaps even its reality of mortality.  When you and she meet again, remember to let her lead and simply enjoy the unmappable journey.
